The project is used as a means of scrutin izing the abilities and prowess of sophomores in solving practical and rea l-life fluid mechanics problems as well as polish the self-learning abilit ies of students entailing extremely positive outcomes. \n\nThe project was conducted with the sponsorship from KSB Pumps and School of Mechanical an d Manufacturing Engineering (SMME)\, National University of Sciences and T echnology (NUST). KSB Pumps works in close association with NUST as both e nvisage production of quality engineers from Pakistan.\n\n\n\n\nThe projec t was conducted as the semester project for the students of Fluid Mechanic s-II course of SMME\, NUST. The participants were required to achieve pred efined pressure heads at up to 5 out of 8 points on the provided bench. An initial head was provided through a tank installed at the top of the benc h. Students had to consider all sorts of losses (major and minor) and adva nce a possible solution in the form of a pipe network. Students were to de monstrate the working off their pipe network and were called for viva voce \, where their learning was appraised. Unique problem statements were desi gned for all of the 36 participating groups.\n\n\n\n\nThe event&rsquo\;s p reparations were initiated well in time according to a chalked-out timelin e. An organizing committee (OC) was formed\, and technical work was initia ted months before the commencement. The event was headed by Mr. Abdullah Z afar and Mr. Abdullah Hayat\, freshman and sophomore students at SMME\, NU ST. The OC worked in close collaboration with the technical team. The task s were well undertaken by the OC. The bench was designed and modified by a dedicated team led by Mr. Zeeshan Arshad \;(junior year student at SM ME) and constituting of Mr. Bilal Ghani\, Mr. Uzair Shakeel and Mr. Muhamm ad Owais \;(sophomores at SMME). Once the problem statement was design ed\, it was forwarded to the students. A seminar was conducted in order to help students fathom the complexities of the problem and form a pertinent thinking approach. The demonstration of the designed piping networks and the corresponding evaluation was carried out over a week&rsquo\;s span in the respective lab session of each group from 29th April to 3rd of May. Th e demonstration was scrutinized by Mr. Mansoor-ud-din Chishti (Faculty SMM E) and Dr. Muhammad Sajid (Faculty SMME\, initiator of Fluid Bench Project ) and viva voce was conducted mainly by Mr. Chishti. The marking criterion accommodated 2 centimeter tolerance for each head. \; A report was al so collected and assessed by Dr. Muhammad Sajid. A total of 36 teams parti cipated in the event. Dr. Emad Uddin \;(Faculty SMME) and Dr. Zaib Ali \;(Faculty SMME) provided support to the chapter in organizing the pr oject. The project was able to engage around 100 non-IMechE Members and 30 IMechE Members either as audience or as participants.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ev ent provided the students with a learning opportunity\, who were able to t ake the following from the event:\n\n Ability to apply their classroom knowledge of Fluid Mechanics\, with a specific focus on internal pipe flow \, to designing pipe systems to fulfill the pressure head requirements.\n An experience of the scaled down engineering complexities associated wi th designing piping networks for cities.\n Correlating theoretical work with a final practical design.\n\nThe students provided a positive feedba ck to the chapter which encouraged IMechE NUST Student Chapter to continue organizing such projects and competitions in the future.\n\n\n\n\nWritten by: Muhammad Arsal Rehman (SMME\, NUST)\n\nContact Details: Saad Shabeer\ nTelephone: +923000571706\nAddress: Islamabad\, Pakistan.\n\n Alternative Contact: Sunia Tanweer\nAddress: Islamabad\, Pakistan.
