In many cases the treatment for this congenita l deformity is to implant a stent\, a metal mesh structure that is expande d inside the aorta to increase its diameter. Due to the small number of ch ildren needing this life-prolonging procedure however\, many of the stents used have been designed for adults and are not optimised for use in child ren. The congenital defects that result in aortic coarctation in children are typically patient specific and consequently they all require a bespoke treatment. Advances in medical imaging and 3D printing could enable this. In this talk Prof Trí\;ona Lally will show you work being done in t he Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering\, in collaboration with clini cians in Crumlin Hospital and materials scientists in the University of Bi rmingham\, funded by the National Childrens&rsquo\; Research Centre and th e AMBER SFI centre to develop 3D printed patient specific stents that matc h the anatomy of individual children with an aortic coarctation. \; Pr ojects like this are at the forefront of next generation medical device de velopment\, shaping a future where clinical outcomes are vastly improved f or children.\n \;\nAbout the Speaker(s):\nProf. Caitrí\;ona Lall y is a Professor in Bioengineering within the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and Principal Investigator in the Trinity Centr e for Bioengineering (TCBE) in Trinity College Dublin (TCD). She received her BEng (Mechanical Engineering) and MEng (Biomedical Engineering) degree s from University of Limerick and in 2004 she obtained a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in the area of arterial biomechanics and cardiovascular ste nting. \;Prof. Lally&rsquo\;s research is focused on arterial tissue mechanics\, vascular imaging\, vascular mechanobiology and tissue engineer ing. The aim to gain critical insights into the role of mechanics in cardi ovascular diseases.\n\nContact Details: David Cook\n\n Alternative Contact : John Heffernan\nAddress: Ireland.
