Synopsis: The number of passengers travelling on the railways in the UK is increasing at a rate not seen since Victorian times. Pressure to shift freight from road to rail is also increasing throughout Europe. A step change in the number of skilled people entering the industry is required to meet these demands and innovative engineering solutions to make the most of limited assets are also essential.Universities have a key role in both of these areas and Professor Iwnicki will outline the ways in which research teams are working more closely with the railway industry to apply the outputs from research and to demonstrate the benefits of innovations. He will also present examples of the ways in which Universities and the industry are cooperating to encourage young people to考虑从事铁路工程和帮助to ease the skills shortage.
Simon Iwnicki is Professor of Railway Engineering at the University of Huddersfield where he is the Director of the Institute of Railway Research (IRR).
