Description
The Kilimanjaro Challenge is a project led by the Institution's Iberia Group volunteers to design and build a human-powered wheelchair that will help a disabled athlete to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania -almost 6,000 meters above sea level.
The team includes: the disabled athlete who will be using the chair, four IMechE Iberia members, three doctors, two professional guides, and two representatives from our supporters.
The Kilimanjaro Challenge came to live over 24 months ago. Since then, all the people involved, volunteers, supporting companies, experts and Iberia Group Committee Members, have been working very hard to make this idea come true.
This Challenge has been an opportunity for the Institution to lead other engineering institutions across Europe by engaging engineering students, letting them know how we do things, improving the networking of students and professionals, and allowing everybody to know how to improve the live of other people through engineering.
The Kilimanjaro Challenge has brought together all types of engineers: composite materials, mechanisms, design, manufacturing and testing. This team has dedicated a huge quantity of their spare time (weekends, bank holidays, after work) to design, build, integrate and customize the chair to the disabled athlete's needs.
The Kilimanjaro Challenge is a unique Project that has brought together volunteers, corporate social responsibility and innovative technologies.
THE CHAIR:
- Human-powered.
- Designed to overcome sand, rocks, snow and very steep gradients with volcanic gravel.
- A few meters before reaching the top, a giant volcanic rock will challenge the creativity of our engineers and the challenger's physical condition.
