The presentation will illustrate how engineers can contribute to a successful railway industry of the future. This will include addressing challenges arising from:
· Continued passenger and freight growth in UK;
· Sustainability considerations including fuel choice, emissions;
· Train control options to improve capacity;
· Opportunities provided by enhanced communications; and
· Transport modal shift.

· The presentation will also provide examples of how the industry should become more system orientated and use experience gained in Europe and other parts of the world. The presentation will also review how the industry should take advantage of imminent changes resulting from Crossrail and High Speed Rail.”

Richard East works within Atkins and has spent several years working in Denmark on ERTMS and new vehicle projects. He has been part of the successful Inter City Express Programme. Richard joined the rail industry in 1977, was sponsored through University by British Rail.
