In this presentation, Irish Rail's Chief Mechanical Engineer Peter Smyth discusses current and future fleet development in Irish Rail. The presentation will cover day to day operations, with the continuous pressure to drive down costs, as well as recent innovations such as remote diagnostics, condition monitoring, acoustic monitoring of bearings, automatic wheel measurement and other measurement systems. He will also take a look forward to consider what form future Irish rolling stock might take and how it might be operated and maintained.Peter Smyth is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with principal responsibility for the maintenance and overhaul of Irish Rail’s rolling stock. His rail-industry career started in 1993 with British Rail and he has worked in senior roles in a number of railway businesses including ScotRail, Atkins Consultants and Angel Trains. He joined Irish Rail in 2007 as Head of Capital Projects, leading the procurement and introduction of new trains and major refurbishment projects, becoming Chief Mechanical Engineer in 2010 with direct responsibility for the maintenance and overhaul of Irish Rail’s wide ranging fleet of locomotives, wagons, carriages, DMU and EMU trains operating freight, passenger intercity and commuter services across the network.
