Speaker's synopsis: Modern science and engineering students have unparalleled opportunities to not only learn their craft at the university level but to engage the public in what they are doing. It has never been more essential in my opinion to ensure that the community at large is well versed and indeed excited about science and engineering research. Students can relate very well to people if they are given sufficient practice and guidance in ambassadorial roles. This talk will highlight some of the interesting projects at the York University Observatory that undergraduate and graduate students have undertaken in recent years. From refurbishing a 1960s telescope and dome to a semi automated data acquisition system controllable from over the internet to conducting tours for visitors aged 4 to 80 years, science and engineering students represent the backbone of these activities. I will also touch upon the exciting expansion of engineering at York University in the very near future.Click for more details:2011 Festive Meeting Flyer - Paul DelaneyThis event was recorded.
