Medical device development is fraught with hurdles and often involves a variety of challenges spanning many different disciplines. This presentation aims to give a broad overview of the device development process and the considerations for gaining approval of combination products. Real world examples are used to show how mechanical engineering and innovation can be utilised to develop combination products and ultimately improve patients’ lives.

PLEASE NOTE NEW DATE 18 OCTOBER Applying science and engineering to healthcare is one of the most multidisciplinary areas of R&D and can be one of the most rewarding (although also occasionally frustrating)! Developing a new diagnostic, monitoring or treatment technique in the laboratory is exciting, but the real reward is to get that technique out of the lab and into use on patients.

  • Event Type: Conference
    15 March 2018 08:45to18:00
Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) - Cambridge
This one-day conference will showcase current collaborations between engineers, scientists and the wider biological and biomedical community, and aims to build bridges between researchers and practitioners in these areas. Talks will cover the broad range of research underway in the Cambridge area, with a particular focus on West Cambridge. The conference is organised by Cambridge University Engineering Department, in conjunction with the IMechE Biomedical Engineering Division.

    20 December 2017 18:30to20:30
    Cambridge Consultants Ltd - Cambridge
Current surgical robots give surgeons the ability to precisely and delicately manipulate tissue without requiring large incisions into the body. The robots themselves are large and costly, however, which limit their use. We discuss some of the engineering underpinnings that cause these robotic systems to be large, and talk through strategies for overcoming these limitations.
