Sanders have long been used in GB Rail, where sand is dispensed from the train to improve train traction and braking performance in low adhesion conditions. A recent comprehensive programme of track testing has determined the benefits that could be achieved by: • Variable-rate sanding (i.e. higher sand flow rates at higher speeds), and • Distributed sanding (i.e. multiple sanders distributed along the train).

The presentation will discuss the derailment investigation process, from being called to the site of a derailment through to delivering an investigation report and developing recommendations to reduce the risk of future incidents. The use of analysis techniques, such as vehicle dynamics simulation, to assist in the investigation process will also be discussed.
