What is the the judicious mix for rail decarbonisation? This presentation concerns the respective contribution of electrification and other traction technologies if rail traction is to be net-zero carbon by 2050. In doing so it considers requirements for a net-zero carbon railway and the transitional arrangements. It also addresses UK decarbonisation programmes beyond the rail industry which will be needed if rail traction is to achieve net zero. The rail industry decarbonisation taskforce has concluded that rail decarbonisation can only be achieved with a ‘judicious mix of electric, battery and hydrogen traction. Since then, Network Rail has published its interim Traction Decarbonisation Network Strategy (TDNS) report which specifies this mix, although some unknowns remain. David Shirres has written extensively on this subject. He will explain the role of each type of traction in a net-zero carbon railway
