Workshop
20 June 2023 16:30 - 18:00
This event has finished
Description

IMechE Fellow & STEM educator Caroline Alliston offers a new approach to engaging primary school pupils with climate change and sustainability through curriculum-linked STEM activities. The workshop will introduce you to the activities, including:

  • A set of practical scientific experiments to help pupils understand the causes, mechanisms and impact of climate change
  • Carbon footprint calculations: using their mathematical skills to get pupils evaluating the environmental impact of day-to-day activities and hence how lifestyle changes could reduce their impact on the planet
  • Design & technology projects demonstrating various solutions for sustainable living

Attendees will learn how to deliver these activities in class. Each attendee will get to make a wind turbine and a water wheel using upcycled and everyday materials, which can become demonstration units when making them with a class.

这是一个我oint workshop between the IMechE and the Association for Science Education (ASE). Engineers and teachers will be encouraged to link up and plan to deliver the activities in class. This is a great opportunity for engineers to pass on their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm to the next generation.

You don't need to be a registered STEM Ambassador- all school activities will be undertaken jointly with a teacher.

This event will be in UKRRIN (building Y20), Seminar Room. The building entrance can be foundhere; there's an image file with directions from University train station to the venuehere; alternatively use the North East car park or get in touch for directions to parking for those with restricted mobility. UKRRIN can be also found on thisinteractive University map. If there's no one on reception, you may need to wait a little while for someone to let you in.
