Kirkby Stephen East is a historic train station and steam railway, built by the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1861 and now maintained and operated by Stainmore Railway Company (a purely volunteer organization). Not only do the volunteers maintain this historic train station, but have also built a reputation within the industry for excellence; having built up expertise with the restoration of Victorian and Edwardian rolling stock. Over the years, not only has the station been restored from an empty shell, but volunteers have also relaid all of the track, relocated and restored authentic North Eastern Railway Watering facilities, and more.

The highlight of the day will be a ¼ mile train ride in a 1930’s teak carriage, hauled by No.2111 Lytham St. Anne’s, the first standard gauge steam locomotive to run on Rapeseed Briquettes. Displays and exhibits will also be presented in both the station museum and the station master’s office. Lunch will be provided, upon arrival from 11am to Noon in a restored 1930’s buffet car. Hence, the site tour itself will commence at Noon. Lastly, memorabilia will be available to purchase from the gift shop.

Kirkby Stephen East is located on the outskirts of small upper Eden town of Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria. If driving please use the postcode as CA17 4LA. The station can also be reached using public transport via Stagecoach bus service 563 available from the Penrith train station. Limited places are available on a first come first basis. Also, more places may be made available based upon popular demand (so please contact on the email below if the event is sold out and you’re interested).

The tour will commence at11:00 onJune 17, 2023 at Kirkby Stephen East (see Location address for details). The train ride itself is expected to take place at 15:00. Please book a ticket using the cart option shown on this page.
