Recent reports such as the h21 Leeds City Gate Report show that for heat, the most cost-effective route to decarbonising heat at scale may be to undertake CCS and then to supply the hydrogen via existing pipelines to the users, in particular to high intensity users. The hydrogen would be used directly in the boilers. Fuel cells would improve the efficiency further.
In transport, fuel cells are clearly a better way than batteries to power passenger cars. However, for trucks, ships and rail the use of fuel cells remains a long way off.

Amanda Lyne, the recently appointed Chair of the UK Hydrogen and Fuel cell Association, has nearly 15 years’ experience in the industry, having previously founded fuel cell technology company, ACAL Energy and now leading ULEMCo Ltd, who have globally unique capability in the conversion of vehicles to run on hydrogen, particularly hydrogen diesel dual fuel. Through her consultancy business she has worked with a number of players in the sector including the industrial gas companies and fuel cell system integrators, particularly focussed on what is needed to deliver commercial success in this early stage technology industry. Her previous career involved various positions at ICI Chemicals and Polymers, particularly Chlor Alkali, which produces hydrogen as a bi-product of the chlorine production process, so she is arguably one of the UKs most experienced experts in the sector. Alongside this as a Director of the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, she leads the work to deliver economic value from the low carbon sector and developing the area’s strategy to deliver decarbonised energy systems, including heat networks, energy intensive user clusters and the focus on creating value locally from large scale renewables such as off shore wind and the potential for tidal energy.
