Summary:
Geothermal energy is a growing topic of conversation in the UK but has been around for decades across the world, particularly in volcanic regions. Hazel will provide an overview of how we can find, access and use geothermal energy for both heat and power in a number of different geological settings, and discuss why Cornwall is so well suited to geothermal energy. She will talk through the stages of development at the United Downs project, the potential difficulties for future projects in the southwest and highlight the importance of community engagement throughout the lifetime of a project.

Speaker: Hazel Farndale has an Integrated Master’s degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Oxford. Her interest in volcanology led her to the geothermal industry and she started her career as a research geologist with Hotspur Geothermal Ltd, identifying potential geothermal sites and assisting with the development of projects in volcanic regions across the world. This experience developed her passion for geothermal energy, and she joined Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL) as the Project Geologist in 2020 with a drive to help grow the UK renewable industry.
