Description

第一个Gresley类P2 Coc火车头”k o’ the North’ was completed in 1934 by the LNER at their Doncaster Works. It was the most powerful express passenger steam locomotive ever built for a British railway company. It was designed by the famous Sir Nigel Gresley, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER. He also designed the ‘Flying Scotsman’ and ‘Mallard’ (holder of the World speed record for a steam locomotive). A further five locomotives were built but the War interrupted any further development of the class and the full potential was never achieved.

The team that developed the recent Tornado steam locomotive have now taken on the challenge of building a new class P2 steam locomotive at Darlington, to be named ‘Prince of Wales’. We will learn how the project is being organised and financed. The talk will describe necessary improvements that are being incorporated into the design, to improve performance and to meet current railway regulations. How the locomotive is being constructed to run on the railway network will be fully described.

This talk is held by IMechE South Cumbria Young Member Panel (SCYMP) and the South Cumbria Area (SCA).

The Lecture will be followed by the IMechE SCA AGM.

The talk is FREE and open to the general public.

All IMechE Talks qualify for CPD Accreditation.
