Obsolescence - A Journey Through Railway Time
The presentation will use the timeline of railway history to introduce and explain obsolescence management, showing how the short life-cycle of electronic components driven by consumer markets makes sustaining of railway systems increasingly difficult. The presentation will also use examples from other industries to show what happens when obsolescence and design change are not correctly managed, and to show that it is not just electronic components that cause obsolescence issues.
The International Institute of Obsolescence Management (IIOM) was set up in 2015 to advance the science and practice of obsolescence management, and to recognise professional competence of practitioners. It has chapters in the UK, Germany, USA and India, and will hold its 5thinternational conference in Munich in May 2022. Its origins are in the Component Obsolescence Group (COG) that first met in 1997 to address the growing problem of obsolescence in long-life cycle industries such asaerospace, defence and rail.
