Gordon Tait started work straight from school on a Dounreay Training Scheme. He obtained bursary support from them to support my Engineering Degree and following graduation, he started his engineering career at the Prototype Fast Reactor at Dounreay. He moved quickly up the operations chain to become a shift manager, holding the post for six years until the final reactor shutdown and de-fuelling was complete in 1996. With the Dounreay site research work finished, he transferred to nuclear decommissioning, preparing and then implementing decommissioning plans and programmes for chemical process plant, shielded examination cells, criticality test facilities, sodium research laboratories and a materials test reactor. These gave him a fantastic opportunity to pioneer new approaches and explore innovative techniques to achieve cost effective decommissioning solutions to novel challenges. After 40 years in operations, Gordon has now become the site Innovation Manager to allow him to focus fully on technology and strategy development while still maintaining my training and development support to our young engineers.
