Description

The purpose of this competition is to simulate the requirements of a professional engineer so that participants are exposed to the real world of engineering where they have to think for themselves and apply a systematic approach to solve an engineering requirement all within 24 hours.
The Design Challenge consists of three elements which are:
• Work in teams to design a full working conceptual system from a precise brief.
• Produce a “specification” to demonstrate written and graphical skills and the team’s ability to convey their design.
• Deliver a “presentation” to demonstrate verbal and presentational skills and the team’s ability to sell their design solution.

Challenge Overview

The town of Ambleside in Cumbria traditionally receives drinking water from the lakes. As part of the region’s water provider strategy for climate change resilience, it has been decided that Ambleside shall be fed by another source should the lakes and rivers reach low levels during extreme hot weather periods.

Teams shall conceptualise and design a water transport system to deliver from a supply works to the town encompassing several different considerations from environmental impact to maintenance of the system.

How to get involved?

The competition is open to teams of one to three IMechE members.
Each team must register before8 th Februarybut onlyonemember of each team needs to formally register. (Single ticket per team)
After the deadline all teams will be given the design overview and rules/marking criteria to read over before the main event on the13 th & 14th February.
