    The electrification programme in the North West will see over 300km of lines electrified, improving connections between towns and cities in our region and beyond. With the first four phases complete, new electric services are linking Manchester Airport with Scotland, Liverpool, Blackpool and Bolton. The engineering team will give an overview of the programme, development of the options, an overview of the designs, what we’ve learnt during delivery and what the next steps are for the programme.

    Each year the Railway Division holds a competition for the best technical presentations by Engineers in the early stages of their careers, with a first prize of £1000. Regional heats are followed by a final held in London. The North Western Centre AGM takes place on the same evening and offers of assistance for the committee are welcome.

    The presentation will give a brief overview of the IEP Project and then spend time on a number of the specific technical areas; these will include the EMC compatibility issues experienced on GWML & ECML, introduction of bi-mode passenger trains to the UK network and the development of Automatic Power Changeover as part of bi-mode operation. All have required significant cross-industry cooperation and have provided useful lessons to the parties involved for future development of novel systems.

    In 2014 Andy Martlew introduced us to the innovative Class 68 Eurolight diesel locomotives supplied to Direct Rail Services (DRS) by Vossloh España (now Stadler Rail) from 2014 on. Following on the from the success of the Class 68s, DRS went on to procure the Class 88 Eurodual, developed from the 68 and capable of operating either from the overhead line or from the onboard diesel engine. Andy will describe the development of the Eurodual and its introduction into service.

    Transpennine Express is delivering state of the art trains under the “Nova” banner to their customers in the North of England and Scotland. The Nova family includes five car bi-mode trains from Hitachi, five car electric trains from CAF and, for those who thought that loco hauled trains were no more, new carriages from CAF to be hauled by Class 68 locomotives. Sami Gebachi will introduce us to the new fleet and discuss some of the technical challenges associated with their introduction.
