Description

High Salvington Windmill, Tour and Talk.

High Salvington Windmill is an excellent example of a working post mill dating from the 1750's. It is a Grade II listed post mill that has been restored and is in full working order. The mill stands 320 feet (98m) above sea level and is able to take advantage of incoming sea winds.

The windmill is a very interesting working museum, which still sells the flour that it produces. This IMechE event gives attendees the opportunity to learn the history of the restoration process for the windmill that allowed it to finally reopen in 1991. And to also get an insight into the past, learn about old machinery and local history as well as the restoration process.

Inside the mill are two pairs of millstones set in a head-and-tail arrangement, driven by an enormous renewed brake wheel and the original tail wheel. The windshaft is of wood, with a cast-iron poll end, and carries two spring-shuttered sails and two canvas-spread common sails.

Staffed by an enthusiastic team of volunteers who will be happy to answer any questions.

Please be aware that you have to climb stairs to reach the top floor of the mill, so it may not be suitable for all.

Wednesday 26th July 2023, 6.30pm meet for 7.00pm start.
