Laying the first Trans-Atlantic submarine cable presented a severe technical challenge. Many setbacks were encountered along the way. During the first years of operation the system was far from reliable. Breakdown of communication was a common occurrence. As the title suggests locating the fault was as challenging as a searching for a needle in a haystack! Even when the fault was located, effecting a satisfactory repair was stretching existing technology to its limits.
