During this talk we will cover what the SKA will bring to human kind from the data it produces, the learning's we will achieve and the vast engineering challenges that IBM will help solve, that will change computing forever and provide a foundation for the next era of computing.

  • The Fukushima Nuclear Incident: Causes and Consequences

    The talk will describe the boiling water reactor design employed at Fukushima, and then discuss the nuclear incident at the Fukushima Daiichi site. The design and operational failures that influenced the severity of the event will be outlined and the consequences of the event will be analysed.

  • The Optical Oil Field

    The oil extraction process is about 35% efficient for most reservoirs. In order to increase the yield newer approaches are required. The use of optical sensors in permanent reservoir monitoring and other aspects of upstream activities using fibre optic sensors will be presented. The lecture will look at how fibre sensors work and how they can be multiplexed together to form large monitoring networks. The pros and cons of fibre optic sensing will be presented.

  • Superfast Dorset - Broadband for our Future
