Plastics - Falling out of love with the wonder material?

In the century since Leo Baekeland first created Bakelite, plastic's versatility, durability and ability to be moulded into almost any shape has revolutionised product design and facilitated a consumer revolution. It is estimated that humans have created nearly 10 billion tonnes of plastics since the 1950's and these amazing man-made materials have dramatically changed our lives.

This event aims to put our use of plastics into perspective and discuss the engineering realities of how we can mitigate the environmental effects through a more sustainable approach and outline some technologies which could be used to replace or reduce our plastic consumption.

Prior to the event the audience will be invited to submit questions and participate in a pre-debate discussion on social mediaIMechE Wessex Facebook. The most popular questions arousing the most debate will be selected and put to the experts on the night.
