    Coastlines, estuaries and rivers will be radically altered around the world in the 21st Century and beyond as base sea level rises in response to global warming. With large amounts of the world’s industrial infrastructure at, or very close to current sea level, the impact across a wide range of sectors cold be significant. Dr Fox will introduce an IMechE project that aims to help the mechanical, and broader, engineering community explore a professional response to this challenge.

    The aim of the Submarine Dismantling Project (SDP) is to deliver a safe, environmentally responsible and cost effective solution for the dismantling of 27 of the UK’s defueled nuclear powered submarines after they have left service with the Royal Navy. Mike Donnington will be our guest speaker, Mike is currently head of the SDP activities for Babcock International Group and will talk us through Learning from Experience (LfE) in delivering such a complex nuclear project.

    Professor Southwood will present a talk on his expertise in space engineering and discuss opportunities for engineers. “Space technology permeates many aspects of our society already. What are the challenges of making things work in space? Can we go beyond robots in space? How could humans live out on the final frontier? Why would we do it?”.
