Description

The talk will look at the in-use energy efficiency, CO2 emissions and fuel cost for different types of consumer transport (conventional car vs electric vehicle vs H2 fuel cell vs bicycle).

There will also be a brief discussion on how these numbers change when you look at total life-cycle CO2 emissions (which accounts for manufacturing & scrapping/recycling/disposal).

Electric cars appear to be a good solution for reducing CO2 emissions but that assumes that the electricity system itself is decarbonising. Trends in the UK electricity system over the last 20-30 years are shown that illustrates this is the case.

Finally, there is a brief discussion on how vehicle electrification will impact the lubrication and tribology of future vehicles.
