Description

To provide Academic Experts and young Engineers the exposure to real life examples as well problems encountered in the industries, IMechE Pakistan Chapter instigated Power Lecture Series to engage Professionals from reputable organizations to share their experiences and learning.

The first event of Power Lecture Series was held in NED University of Engineering & Technology (NEDUET), Karachi. The event commenced with the recitation of Holy Quran followed by a welcome note by Dr. Nasir Uddin Sheikh (Chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering, NEDUET) who appreciated IMechE for organizing the lecture. He conjectured that such events would indeed be beneficial to engineering students who are about to step into practical world. Chief Guest Dr. Mohammed Uneeb, Vice Chairman IMechE Pakistan, then shared the significance of engaging Academia and Industry. He emphasized on the importance of exposing engineers and faculty to industrial problems. This would not only enhance their learning but, it would also assist implementation of their theoretical understanding into practical application.

The Key Note Speaker of the day, Mr. Amir Bashir (Manager Outages & Planning and 1stClass Boiler Engineer, HubCo), was then invited to discuss “Boiler Retrofit Project” completed in 2015 at Hub Power Station. After giving a brief overview of Hub Power Station, he discussed the need/main cause of doing Boiler Retrofit which included Fire Side Corrosion due to constituents (Vanadium & Sodium) in Residual Fuel Oil, increased surface area of Reheater Tube Bundles resulting in increased Reheat Steam temperatures as well as sagging and bowing of Super-heater bundle tubes resulting in boiler tube leaks as well as failures. This impacted the reliability as well as availability of generation units while also causing adverse impacts on other plant equipment.

Subsequently, the solution was proposed to improve Boiler Tube material from 9Cr to TP347H as well as reduce Reheater surface while also using improved materials for cleats/hanger supports to address sagging issue. Since implemented, the Boiler Retrofit project was a complete success and no tube leaks have been reported since then.

He praised the commitment of industrial experts especially professionals from Power & Energy sector who play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between Academia and Industry, hence, contributing to the development of engineers. Moreover, he thanked Mr. Amir Bashir for his contribution and encouraged experts from other sectors to come forward and share their knowledge/experience through the platform for the welfare of engineers and society.

最后,Uneeb欣赏oraganizers博士of the event and expressed his desire to organise such events in other universities as well so the journey of learning and development continues. Key Note Speaker Mr. Amir Bashir and Dr. Uneeb were given memorabilia shields as a token of appreciation.
