Description

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

我们到达了行业在1000小时icials welcomed all the visitors. An introductory session was arranged outside the office by the staff of the organization for all visitors.

Preparations for the industrial trip started two weeks before the actual trip, which covered all the stuff including the registration of members and the introductory sessions in which they were informed about the industry. Cabinet members as well as directors were the major contributors in organizing this event.

Description:

IMechE UET Taxilaorganized an industrial tour toVolta Batteries (Pvt.) Ltd. on 20thof November 2019 exclusively for its members. Total participation was 40 regular members and two faculty membersEngr. SalahuddinandDr.Amir Sohail. It isISO-9001&ISO-14001certified and affiliated withSAPcompany established in1993, they have been producing various types of automotive and inverter batteries, under the brand names of “VOLTAandOSAKA” for more than19 years. They have state of the art manufacturing unit to produce quality products with more than 3000 employees. Their head office is in Islamabad and is supported by 7 regional offices across the country.

GM of VOLTA, Mr. Iftikhar Ahmad welcomed IMechE UET Taxila chapter in the factory.

Sections visited:

1. Impurity Test of Lead:

The pure lead bricks are made before starting of process with name tags of “VOLTA”99.99% pure leadis used.

2. Alloy Melting and Making of Oxide Paste:

For the making of Lead Oxide Paste powder lead with some other materials is used. And then this oxide paste is molded in form of bricks.

3. Lead Grid Making Section:

The lead bricks are molten at high temperature and by pressure casting the grids are made. Positive and Negative Plates are pasted yellowish and Silver Color Lead Oxide respectively.

4. Curing Section

The grids are sent to this section where they are set under some catalyst and temperature and the paste is bonded with the negative plates and send to the charging section.

5.Charging:

The positive and negative plates are completely immersed in highly diluted sulfuric acid and charged at DC 220 V supply for 24 hours. Here the positive and negative grids are dipped in the electrolyte and the sections of positive and negative are separately made and then electric current of large voltage is supplied for a long time mostly for one day, this electrolyte contain mostly sulfuric acid which has usually have very dangerous fumes which are very dangerous for the workers and visitors, to avoid from these fumes SLS is used which makes foam on the top layer which does not allows the fumes to escape the electrolyte bath, thus saving everyone from the dangerous fumes of acid.

6. Washing Section

在本节中洗了盘子清洁窟er to remove the sulfuric acid on the surface of the grids.

7. Drying, Cutting and Buffing of Plates:

In this section the grids are backed in the oven from 130 C to 150 C temperature range, here all the moisture is fully removed, and the grids are now charged negatively and positively. The positive grids are baked under the open air and pressure, but the negative grids make oxides under certain temperature in open air, so closed chambers are used in which inert gas is used to bake the negative grids.

8. Insulator Inserting:

Here the positive plate is covered into the paper which is made up of fiber and paper or plastic and bundled them with the negative plates and remember that in any assembly the negative plate is always greater than the positive plates, such that in the assembly the negative plates are on the outer ends while positive are always on the middle.

9. Assembly

Then this assembly of plates are fixed into the plastic box of desired shape and Voltage. And the outer cover is sealed by just pressing on it and the connecting rod are welded outside the box, now here the plates are connected with each other and forms a combine assembly of desired voltage and current.

10. Short circuit checking

Assembled battery is passed through the short circuit test section where it is given voltages and test that there is no voltage or circuit shortage in the battery.

11. Heat Seal Machine

In this section the upper case of battery is heated and fixed permanently with the lower case such that an air tight seal is made.

12. Shell of Battery:

To place the pairs of grids together, combination of cells to make a 12 V battery. They are usingPolypropyleneandPolyethylenefor shell making to hold the many cells together.

13. Welding and Connecting of Terminals:

After placing the cells in plastic shells, they connect pairs of cells to obtain 12 V output voltage by the combination of six cells each of two volts and a wide range of different batteries, they use lead welding for the combination of cells.

14. Sealing and Printing of serial:

After the connection of cells and welding of terminals, the battery is closed with its lid through heat joint formation to permanently fix the joint. And after completion of sealing process a serial number is printed on plastic lid.

15. Packing and Storage:

After the completion of sealing and printing process the batteries are packed in cardboard made boxes. And after the completion of packing cartons are send to stores for market supply.

Production, Laboure and Power Consumption:

  • 30,000 per daybatteries of different types.
  • 3000 workers and 75 engineersare working in the factory.
  • 7.6 MWpower is from electric supplier company.
  • 2.6 MWpower is self-produced by gas power plant.

Presentation by Staff:

An introductory seminar was arranged in the conference room by the staff of the organization for all visitors.

The presentation covered the following topics:

  • History of VOLTA Batteries
  • Innovation and customer satisfactory
  • Working of the plant
  • Production rate
  • Types of batteries(VRLA, OPZS, OPZV, GULT LEAD, TUBULAR BATTERIES)
  • Exports.

Benefits of visiting an industry:

  • Build exposure and make students think differently.
  • Make students understand the core values of their field.
  • Build a practical mindset.
  • Improve the communication skills by interaction with workers.
  • To work with discipline and develop professionalism in their work. In the end, the faculty advisor of IMechE UETT thanked the industry officials for their cooperation during the visit.

Need for such events:

IMechE UET Taxila strives to provide its members with opportunities for their professional growth. Student Chair of the chapter believes that students need exposure to enhance their capacities, and this can only come by organizing events in which they are able to understand the core values of engineering. The idea behind visiting an industry was to make the students develop a pragmatic thinking capability by observing the practical world. Through such visits, they get to know how industries work and what are the key areas of knowledge they should have while aiming for this field.
