Brief Background & Summary

SOfE plays a vital part in bridging the gap between engineering technical knowledge and customer understanding, by developing communication and presentation skills in engineers of the next generation. Overall, it enhances public speaking capabilities in engineering students. A competition like SOFE plays a pivotal role in bringing the potentially successful, albeit, shy candidates out of their bubbles and exposing them to their true capabilities.

On the 22^ndof February, 2019, IMechE DHA Suffa Chapter organized Speak Out for Engineering South Regional Competition, in DHA Suffa University. It was held at the Executive Lecture Theatre. Out of the 11 students who passed through the qualifiers three won and proceeded to compete on national level further.

Event details

In 2019, IMechE DSU Chapter got the honor of hosting the South Regional SOFE Competition for the first time. The event was thoroughly planned since October and a team of dedicated individuals was assigned to look after all the requirements of the event. The event went smoothly and it was made sure to keep everything perfect from management and comfort to food and even the decorations.

The event started at around 1000 hours after our esteemed guests and judges were welcomed by the head of mechanical department,同上。Dr. Haider Aliand faculty advisor,同上。默罕默德博士Farrukh该. Among the chief guests wereDr. Tufail, Pro Vice-Chancellor of NED and Chair of IMechE Pakistan andDr. Uneeb, Station manager at HUBCO and Vice Chair IMechE Pakistan. Furthermore, the three judges invited, includedMr. Rashid Dastageer, member of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and a certified Toastmaster,Mr. Mirza Saad BaigPresident of Express Toastmaster Club andMr. Sameer Hamid Dodhi, an Entrepreneur, member of Shehri-CBE and a respectable member of the Pakistan’s Human Rights Commission. Around 50 non-members attended the event as well.

The event started with a short welcome note being delivered to our guests and audience about the theme of the event and what SOFE is about. The first five presentations were delivered by Hasan Khan from HUBCO, Bushra Farhat from NED, Muneeb Ather from DSU, Zeeshan Rizvi from NUST and Daniyal Rahim from NED in the aforementioned order.

After these five presentations, a break was announced, at 1300 hours, for lunch. The faculty, judges, guests and participants then made their way to have lunch. Afterwards, the faculty, judges and guests were escorted back to the Executive Lecture Theatre for the recommencement of the event.

The event recommenced at 1430 hours sharp. The final six presentations were then delivered by Saqlain Raza from HUBCO, Qays Hasan from NUST, Hajra Mirza from DSU, Umer Siddiqui from DSU, Hamza Alam from NED and Umar Shahryar Sabswari from HUBCO in the aforementioned order.

Furthermore, the judges made their way to the stage where they delivered valuable, experience-based feedback about the event and also took the liberty of delivering some important tips for performing and delivering the best presentations on the national and international platforms.

The winners of the competition were as follows:
Hajra Mirzafrom DSU secured the first position by presenting on a topic about“Water Crisis and its Solution by Extracting Water from the Air.”
Bushra Farhatfrom NED secured the second position by presenting on a topic about“Smart Grids.”
Qais Hassanfrom NUST secured the third position by presenting on a topic about“Blended Wing Body Aircraft.”

In the end, IMechE DSU Chapter announced the winners. To felicitate the awards our reputed Head of Department and Faculty advisor made their way to stage and the winners were given the awards in the form of shields and all the participants were given certificates. Lastly, the chief guests and the judges were invited on stage to receive a token of appreciation from IMechE DSU Chapter in the form of shields. After a final group picture with esteemed judges, guests, faculty and participants, the reputed guests and judges were escorted for their departure and with that event came to an end.
