IMechE UET Taxila organized a 2-day workshop on SolidWorks in collaboration withHI Robo Tec(Robotics Society in HITEC) on 29^thand 30^thof April in Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) UET Taxila. Students in general and members of IMechE in particular participated in this event with keen interest to learn about SolidWorks and the new features it has to offer. SolidWorks is a solid modelling Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) computer program that runson Microsoft Windows.

IMechE UET Taxilais the first student chapter in Public Sector inPakistan and an IMechE UK-affiliated student chapter. It is in operation since June 2013 and its basic motto is “Improving the World through Engineering”. Preparation of this event started 2 weeks before with all the stuff including the registration of participants. Cabinet members as well as directors were the major contributors in organizing this event.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Event started on 29^thof April at 1200 hours withMr. Mustafa UmarandMr. Usmanas tutor & co-tutor respectively from HI ROBO TEC. Both focusedon the need of3D modelling and simulation in present engineering world. Since everythingis getting its feet found in the computerized technology so its necessary for the new engineering students to get used to the upcoming technology, that primarily includes learning of different softwares. Since SolidWorks had to offer a lot of features, in this two day workshop, main focus was to understand the concept of following features.

Highlighted Features:

Sketching:

In order to make something or present your idea the basic thing that you do is sketching, SolidWorks allows you to do 2D, 3D sketching with enhanced features, SolidWorks allows you to use different commands in your different stages of sketching, some command are listed below:

1. Trim and Extend
2. Dimensioning
3. Offset
4. Different line and shape commands.

Part Modelling:

In this section, participants were given knowledge about modelling a part or component of any machinery. Students were made familiar with the terms and commands that are necessary to understand in order to make a part in SolidWorks. Students were given the concept ofextrudefeatures,bossfeature,cutfeature,filletandrevolvefeatures.

Assembly:

SolidWorks provides this ease of making parts according to the specified dimensions so that testing of individual parts is to be done before assembling them. In assembly, students were made aware how to insert a new part in assemblymate features,assembly featuresandadvanced mate.

Questionnaire Session:

A short Q&A session was also arranged in order to minimize the confusions of the students and make them practical in their approach. Student inquired the tutors various questions related to worldwide use of this software and further changes or advancements that could take place in near future regarding SolidWorks.

Need for such events:

Every society has the narrative and the perspective according to which it works. Similarly, IMechE UET Taxila is always of the view to give its members a platform where they can showcase their talent and their hidden abilities. For this they need exposure, and this can only come by organizing such events in which students are able to understand the core values of their field. The motto or the idea behind holding this two-day workshop on SolidWorks was to make students think practically and make them get used to the advancements happening in the field of engineering.

Benefits of such workshops:

1. Builds exposure and makes students think differently.

2. Makes students understand the core values of their field.

3. Builds practical mindset.

4. Improves their technical skills to great extent so that they can get expertise in the required area.

5. 使学生的创新和创造性的应用roach and to develop new ideas that would be applicable in near future.

In the end, a special assessment test was organized for the participants. The top 3 successful participants were awarded with certificates. A certificate and souvenir was also presented to the tutor by the Student Chair of IMechE UETT, Mr. Murad Ashraf.
