The provision of a large wind tunnel testing capability at the University of Adelaide has become a key part of many different Mechanical Engineering research disciplines. Whether it involves the testing of novel wind turbine and aerofoil designs, the effects of flow on solar collection technologies, or the study of fundamental aero-acoustic phenomenon, the varied applications of the Thebarton wind tunnel is diverse. This presentation will include a practical perspective on the day to day operations of the Thebarton wind tunnel, and a brief overview of some of the interesting projects that have been through the facility to date. The presentation will incorporate a first-hand walk-through of the wind tunnel research laboratory.
Marc Simpson, a Mechanical Engineer, has the primary responsibility of coordinating activities at the University of Adelaide’s Engineering Research Laboratories at Thebarton, which incorporates the Thebarton wind tunnel testing facility. Marc’s background experience at the University of Adelaide includes research, teaching and consulting, and has carried out the role of overseeing the day to day operations of the wind tunnel facility since it was first commissioned back in 2011.
