Description

12th April 2022
16:00 - 18:00 Singapore Time
09:00 - 11:00 UK Time

This Technical Webinar has been jointly developed together with the Energy Institute and is supported by the Nuclear Institute, Rolls Royce SMR and Core Power.

To set the scene Eilidh Dougan will explain to us how Nuclear Energy has the potential to add a low carbon option to the energy mix.

Eilidh works within project development for Sizewell C. Her role involves making the case for nuclear as part of a clean energy mix. Eilidh also sits on the Strategic Committee for the Nuclear Institute’s Young Generation Network.

Eilidh will cover low carbon related topics such as:-

  • The need for new nuclear
  • How nuclear complements renewables
  • How nuclear compares to other technologies in regards to carbon emissions, land use, safety etc.
  • The life cycle emissions of nuclear power
  • The elephant in the room – nuclear waste and what we do with it
  • The potential other low carbon energy available from nuclear power plants

The second part of our webinar will look at whether there is really a business case for Nuclear Energy and will be given by Clare Turgoose.

Clare is an analyst on the Sizewell C project, where her role involves making the case for new nuclear in the UK and engaging with the Government and investors to develop the financing framework. Clare is also part of the Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network committee.

Clare will cover the Business and Financial model for Nuclear and in particular:-

  • How the Energy Crisis and rising energy costs are challenging the low carbon energy mix
  • Balancing Nuclear and Renewables on the Grid
  • Can the inclusion of Nuclear make a Renewable based grid cheaper?

  • Sizewell C - will a repeat design keep the costs down?

  • Sizewell C - the new financing model for Nuclear

In the third part of the webinar we introduce Paul Howdle from Rolls Royce SMR.

保罗是一个特许工程师,FIET和FIMechE文章。manbetx体育注册巴勒斯坦权力机构ul joined Rolls-Royce plc in 1986, and is currently the Head of Engineering at Rolls-Royce SMR, with accountability for establishing and maintaining engineering capabilities necessary to deliver the SMR nuclear power station programme. Paul will provide an overview of the SMR design and programme, its part in the Net Zero Challenge, and how it aims to remove cost, lead-time and risks typically associated with nuclear power station design, build and operation.

The fourth presentation will be a snapshot into the futureof advanced nuclear energy. We are pleased to welcomeMikal Bøe的核心动力will explain to us how advanced nuclear is a true-zero emission technology in need of a mass-market, and how the maritime sector provides access to a market where true-zero emission technologies can effectively be deployed. Mikel will go on to discuss the criteria for success of advanced nuclear at sea and the path to deployment.

Mikal Bøe is a Norwegian national living in London and has over three decades of experience from floor to board level in shipping, finance, and technology. As Chairman and CEO of CORE POWER, Mikal today plays a key role in the development and deployment of those advanced reactor technologies which can help ocean transportation and heavy industry to meet its emission reduction targets.

In the final part of the webinar we will have a panel discussion where you can put your questions to the speakers through our moderator.

CPD NOTE - What you will learn:-

1. How difficult it will be to reach Carbon Net Zero by 2050
2. How available nuclear energy technology can be very low carbon, have a realistic business case and a safety case commensurate with other forms of energy generation.
3. What new and advanced nuclear technologies are being developed for deployment before 2050 to help meet Carbon Net Zero

Speaker(s)

Clare Turgoose and Eilidh Dougan are members of the Nuclear Institute and work within project development for Sizewell C on the project business case and the low carbon energy mix. Paul Howdle is Head of Engineering, Rolls-Royce SMR Limited. Mikal Boe is Chairman and CEO of Core Power.
